Picot Edged Cardigan

A simple stocking stitch cardigan, with picot edged detail, formed by yarn-overs and stitching. This is a very easy design to knit up and Fiona McTague plays on the simplicity by offering the design in Jaeger Cashmere. I substituted with Jaeger Baby Merino 4 ply, a very soft, machine washable wool, which was much more affordable as well as practical.

The darker blue in the photos is truer to the yarn colour than the blue that the scanner produced.

I bought some blue cashmere and some blue merino and asked my brother which he would prefer. He actually picked the merino on the grounds, that only a crazy woman would use cashmere for a baby sweater. Did I not realise that babies usually wear their food? Was I out of touch with the cost of dry cleaning clothing? There isn't a price difference between adult and baby jumpers. His wife doesn't like going to the dry cleaners either and never hand washes anything.

The merino just wasn't as bouncing as I had hoped and you can see the tension irregularities really clearly in this yarn. This finishing for this sweater took ages. There is a lot of sewing, all the edges, had to be sewn in, and the button loops were 2 stitch i-cords.

It took me some effort to find the right buttons as well. Small buttons with shanks were more of a challenge to find than I thought, and even when I found them, at Liberty, they only had 5 in stock.

Project Notes

1. Not sure why, but I ended up with a bit of a flare, so this came out as an 'A' line cardigan

in full glory..

2. Check out all the seams. I tried to do this in one piece, but found that the body was a little too wide for the sleeves. So I cheated and mattress stitched it togther to get rid of a little of the width in the body.

All smoothed out ..

Here's a close-up of the seams

3. Close-up of the button loops and the buttons. I'm very proud of these loops, they took me ages to do. I hare i-cord, especially on such fine wool.
