Gull Wing Socks

I started these socks in December 2002, intending them for my mother-in-law. However, I was knitting 2 socks on 2 circulars taking the yarn from both ends of the skein. What a nightmare! The whole thing kept getting tangled and so I put them aside and made something else instead.

A nice little wrapper for a pair of socks , that went out as a make-up present to Kristine for the Rowan Embellishment Exchange

Come July, I decided that I would finish these socks and picked off for where I left off. Unfortunately,I left my book with my parents in the US. Fortunately, my knitting pals got me the lace pattern. I turned the heel and tried on the socks and they were much too tight. (Ouch!). I had no choice but to unravel the whole thing and restart again, so this time it was 1 sock on 2 circulars and it looks pretty nice. The Opal yarn is very subtle dotted with a darker burgundy shade, giving the yarn a lot of depth. The dark colour also played to the strength of the lace patterns.

I was so pleased to finish them, it's not fun knitting with wool in a heatwave! They were made for my friend Kristine as her knitter's gift in the Rowan 2003 Embellishment Exchange thatI helped organise with Emma went missing. I was so chuffed when she told me that she wore them around the office in the middle of the summer. Here's a close-up of the sock.

Project Notes

1. The pattern called for 56 stitches on 2.75 mm needles, I ended up using 81 stitches on 2mm needles. As usual, I carried the pattern down the foot.

2. Here's a close-up of the swatch. Hard to see on dark wool.
