George

A simple, raglan style baby cardigan with cable details on the button band. Originally knitted in Jaeger Matchmaker DK, I've subbed using Rowan Handknit DK that I had in stash. The Rowan Handknit DK knit to a slightly different tension, but I was able to use the yarn without adjusting the pattern.

George is a very easy and quick project, more interesting than a simple stocking stitch cardigan. I think that the collar could had been a bit longer, since it has a tendency to ride up. I 'fixed' that, by tacking it down on the raglan joins and on the middle of the back of the neck.

I just followed the instructions and knit until I was done. After casting off the collar, I realised that it was a tad too short and would ride up, showing that unsightly seam where the collar joined up, so I used some extra yarn and stitched it down. I didn't stitch down the front of the collar though, since that needed to adjust for movement. The collar would sit differently depending on if the buttons were buttoned or left open.

Project Notes

1. The iron broke, so I couldn't steam block it. Eager to get on with the button band and neckband, I mattress stitched it together without blocking, reckoning to block after these bits have been knitted. As usual, I connected all the pieces, leaving the side seam (sleeve and body) to be done last.

2. That's an awful lot of ends to weave in. I'm starting to be a big fan of these neckdown projects for children. The making up is so much easier.

3. Doesn't this blue look just like the Caribbean? I had a hard time finding buttons to match though. In the end, I just took the plastic ones. Sailboats would had looked cool, but they were just too big and flowers were much too girlie. As customary with most of my sweaters, I bought an extra button and sewed it into the seams. Here's a front and back view.

5. Awaiting picture of it on the recipient. My brother has requested that I make something in a dark color, as it appears that my nephew is not exactly a tidy eater. (Must take after his father)
