Fuzzy Feet

Warm fuzzy, felted slippers, guaranteed to preserve marital harmony, on those cold nights. The slippers are actually a ridiculously large pair of socks knitted in wool and felted in the wash. To get the right fit and shape, you put them on your feet when wet, and keep them on until it dries.

The nights are getting cold, and being raised in a Chinese household, I'm just not used to wearing shoes in the house. So, my feet tend to get very cold in the winter time. I originally got some chunky print, so that I can do a bit of echo knitting with my friend Jen, aka The Yarnivore. So what, can be more fun but to have a pair of my very own as well.

Felting isn't an exact science, the yarn doesn't always behaves. I chose the chunky print because it wasn't white. My friend, Sissel warned me about white yarns. The chemical processing to make it white, also prevents it from felting. So I checked to make sure that there wasn't any white yarn in it at all. The original pattern also called for aran weight wool. Since I selected a chunky, I had to make a few changes to the orginal pattern.

I'm really pleased with my fuzzy feet. I would tweak the pattern a bit more next time, since they came up a little loose on my ankles, by reducing the cast on to 36 stitches instead of the 40 that I used.

Project Notes

1. Pattern amendments used :
Cast on
Heel Flap
Heel

Gusset
40 stitches
Done on 20 stitches, with 20 rows total
Row 1: P11 instead of P13
Row 2: K5 instead of K6
End with 10 stitches on heel turning
Picked up 10 on each side of heel flap for a total of 50 stitches

Here's a sense of scale as to how big these socks actually were prior to felting

2. The chunky print on 9mm works up fast, in virtually no time at all, I had 2 fussy feets, ready to felt.

3. The Chunky Print is a very loosely plied yarn (like roving), but very soft. It makes a lovely felted fabric and who can complain when it's almost self-knitting.
