Afghans for Afgahns Swatch Project
A project run by Ann and Kay from Mason-Dixon Knitting to benefit the Afghans for Afghans Charity Org. The MDK girls are giving away bags of Rowan and Jaeger Wool in a monthly drawing, based on the swatches submitted by their readers.
Each square needs to be 8 inch by 8 inch (20 cm by 20 cm), in an easy care yarn, with no living create motifs. They have to be square. There's going to be a big sewing party at the end.
Here is my February Contribution. 4 Swatches, 1 in Wendy Aran Cotton and 3 in Paton's Symphony.
Here are some other contributions
Feeling a strong need to do some intarsia, I got out some eltham shetland and some boucle and made a heart square. I had to log cabin around it to get it to an 8 inch square.
I tested out the flower motif for the Lacy sweater on some Paton's Hip Hop. I really like this yarn. It's spongy and wonderfully soft.
What happens when you ply up several strands of boucle? You get a terry cloth texture. It came out much more interesting that I would had thought.
With a tiny bit of leftover Rare Earth Alpaca, I used it for the centre square for this log cabin style square. The grey is a lovely mohair that I had left overed from a project, ages ago. I plied it up to get a warm square.
Does the ecru of the Rowan denim stay ecru after being put in the wash with some blue denim? Yes! It just gets a very slight blue tinge. Experiment completed and we get a square for the Mason Dixon girls too.
Feeling a bit of the fairisle bug, here are 2 fair isle squares. The red and purple one is done using purple shetland and red cascade 220, one of the worlds best, affordable yarns and available in a gazillion shades. The lover square is just done with shetland. My tension came out pretty good on this.
Here's a shot of the 24 squares that I brought over to Kay during the Memorial Day weekend. There were wool, acrylic, cotton, alpaca and a variety of blends.
Here's a close-up of a few of the select squares. I was knitting squares on my flight from London to NY and I managed to get 3 squares done. Over the course of the next few days, I did a few more just using some scrap wool that my mom saved from previous projects.
