When I was little and moaned that the house was cold in the winter, I was to put on another sweat shirt. Mom always said, that when you paid the heating bills yourself, you'll have a lot more tolerance for cold... and well, she's right. It's been cold, cold, cold, but the heat and fireplace were only lit, after dark.

But, a shawl knit in heavier weight yarn can be so cozy and warm.

although, I followed the instructions to this pattern (Cheryl Oberle's Highland Triangle), there were several things that didn't work exactly as planned. You can see here, that there is a slight flair at the edge, even with a hard block.

I love the colour of this yarn though. A slightly raspberry red, as opposed to fire engine red.

and the center is sweet.
I'm really please that I've managed to post all the presents and cards now (the last 5 presents were a total nightmare, as I was left waiting for things to arrive so that I could wrap them and post them and the queues at the post office were appalling, even if everyone waiting was in a fairly good temper). Having some time off, really made all the difference.
happy new year!
the shawl's lovely -- and i love the shade of red!

The shawl is beautiful. The yarn is gorgeous, and I kind of like the bit of flare at the edge.
The shawl looks lovely! It does help to have one to wrap up in on cold days, doesn't it? And you knit it in such a wonderfully warm color that just looking at it could make you all warm inside!

Posted by: Lu at December 24, 2009 11:41 PMGorgeous! I bet the flared edge doesn't effect the warmth at all. I looks so cozy!
Posted by: brenda at December 24, 2009 03:53 PMThat is a beautiful shawl. Really lovely.
Have a wonderful Christmas and light the fire !
We find it more economical, through the winter, to keep the fire permanently lit. It reduces the use of central heating, giving the whole house a background warmth, and you use less coal if you don't keep lighting it from cold.
