Gone Wrong

Sometimes, it seems that I can't do anything right. First, the blanket, for those of you that can't see the problem, here's the wrong one.

Normally, I would ladder this down and fix it, the only problem is that it's wrong across all the letters so I would have to ladder down 5 times, and when you have to do that, it's easier to just rip and reknit it. It also means that I have more errors in the first tier of letters than I thought, as I managed to be out by 2 sts.. so I might as well rip that out and start again.

Then, there are these socks. I'm using my cherished, hoarded Cherry Tree Hill Supersocks in Potluck greens and blues, purchased from Woollyworkshop at Ally Pally last year. The pattern is Ellen's Stockings from Nancy Bush's Folk Knitting in Estonia.



I managed to finished and graft sock 1, last night and this afternoon, I pulled it out to show my friends and put in on the table in front of me .. then I noticed. Yup, I messed that up big time too.


So, once I finish sock #2, I'll gird my loins and unpick the grafting and tink* back... I can see that May is going to be a totally unproductive month.

*A lightbulb went on the other day... TINK = KNIT spelled backwards. I must be the only person that didn't know that.

Polly: If you haven't re-started the baby blanket (3rd time?) yet, here's a thought: Perhaps you are being distracted by "symmetry" of the blanket and how to lay out the letters. I know I've been distracted by the puzzle. Here's an idea:

Four blocks across, one block is blank or has a "toy". The toy block can be at either end of the row of blocks:

[ ] [D] [E] [F]
[G] [H] [I] [ ]
[ ][J] [K] [L]
[M] [N] [O] [ ]
[ ][P] [Q] [R]

I know how it feels when the pattern is wrong - I will also rip it back as I will keep looking at it & not feel good. I guess that's the fun of tinking & knitting. Love the colors of your socks.

Polly, I think that third chevron across the instep looks great! If you haven't started the second sock yet, add the same "error"! Beautiful design!

I know you have to be comfortable with your projects but it does seem a lot of effort for such small little mistakes. The socks and blanket are still beautiful. Perhaps think of the mistakes as being humble like the Turkish rug makers?

I would be quick to call that sock thing a design element too, but on the other hand I have great understanding for those that can't.

You crack me up, b/c I guess I'm not as much of a perfectionist as you. That said, I can see how you would need to fix that error on the blanket, especially if it leaves you off by a few stitches.

Really, you just realized that tink is knit spelled backwards? That's pretty funny.

I think I found out about "tink" when someone else asked about it on an email list. Luckily I was alone when I went "DOH!".

Just wanted to say that up until a very short time ago, I hadn't realized that "tink" was "knit" spelled backwards, either, and I thought I was the only one... Now I feel a little better :-)
