I started these socks as my commuting project and have been steadily working on them. It's based on the Gentleman's Plain Winter Socks from Nancy Bush's Vintage Socks. The yarn is Cherry Tree Hill Supersock in Tropical Storm... a stash, well marinated in the stash.

I've always been a fan of the Cherry Tree Hill Yarns. I love the high twist, softness and smoothness of the merino. Since I'm knitting them for the hubbler (yes, I was surprised that he selected this skein from my stash because, well, there is a bit of purple in it), I've taken to not cutting the yarn until the second sock sock is done, so in the event of running low on yarn, I've hedged my bets and can do a contrasting toe.

The heel is a slight variation on the tradition heel stitch. The stitch that is slipped, is twisted. You end up with a very firm heel.
More interesting is how the mood (poolong) of the yarn is is dramatically changed just by sts. The foot section here is on 68 sts on 2,5mm

The leg section is 72 sts.

I have to admit to preferring the narrower striping on the foot.... hard to belive how big a difference 4 sts make
Posted by atu at April 30, 2008 08:33 PM | TrackBackI have some Cherry Tree Hill sock yarn, but have yet to knit with it. I'm scared to knit wit this yarn for my dbf b/c he's hard on socks. Not sure if 100% merino sock yarn will last more than a few earings with him. There is lots of yardage in a skein of the CTH.

Posted by: Donna at May 4, 2008 12:08 PMLovely colour :0) And thanks for the tip on the twisted heel stitch - I'll try it out the next time I'm knitting socks !
Posted by: Heather at May 2, 2008 02:27 PMI'll say, that's amazing, the 4 stitches bit I mean. I love the color. Hubbler has good taste.
Posted by: Tracey at May 2, 2008 09:04 AMDoes the twisted slipped stitch heel last longer? I love Cherry Tree Hill sock yarn too. Great colour.
Posted by: Steph at May 1, 2008 01:41 PMTell me about the difference 4 stitches can make! I've been ranting, lately, about how the self-patterning/striping yarns turn into very wide (2 and a half inches or more) clown stripes of color on my very skinny legs. Awful!
