I have been working away on Sylph but the nagging doubts about how it will look on me have been growing. It is 'so not like the things that I usually wear' that I had to push those doubts down and just keep going. I keep thinking that this design will emphasis all my figure flaws without doing anything to enhance it... it's hard to stay focused when every disaster scenario seem to unfold in my mind.
So, I did the button bands, as per the instructions. I have some eye and hook closures somewhere in the sewing box. I'm hoping that it will look o.k. I really like the way that you get the neatness with the shortrow shaping.

I attached it by picking up and doing a three needle bind off. I am less enamoured by the way that it rolls. I haven't blocked it yet, but I'm hoping that the blocking will get rid of the rolling. Otherwise, I'll have to hunt out some narrow grosgrain.
Then I added the flounce. I know, a lot of you hate the flounce. Again it rolls like mad. I'll get out the iron and give it a blast of steam to see if it sorts it.

I didn't like the cast-off coming just after the purl row, so I cast off and then did a crochet thing-y on it. Don't ask, if it was single or double or what ... I improvised as I don't know how to crochet.

I have feeling that I'm going to look like a stuff sausage in it when I'm done, but I think that I will finish it... just be gentle, ok?
Posted by atu at April 20, 2008 06:05 PM | TrackBackWell, to be honest, so far, I love it. It's funny, sometimes things that we would never pick out to wear ourselves, and someone else chooses for us, turn out to be extremely flattering. I hope it all works out in the end.
Posted by: Tracey at April 25, 2008 03:17 AMI think it's looking lovely. I like the frilly bit & I hope everything will be alright. Good luck.

When I first saw this sweater in Interweave I thought it wouldn't look good on very many people, but was really surprised when Sandy did the knit gallery of this sweater. I thought it looked fabulous on everyone who modeled it. I think you'll be pleased with it!
I don't think I'd dare knit, much less wear something like this in fear of how I would look in it. Yay to you for daring, I think it will pay off!

Posted by: Sarah at April 21, 2008 02:20 PMI know that feeling of dread and I hope your fears are unfounded.
Posted by: jessie at April 21, 2008 10:57 AMNonsense, it will be faboulus!!! (and I do promise to be gentile, though I doubt that I need to - your knitting is something to admire, not criticise)
Posted by: Karen S at April 21, 2008 08:23 AMKeep going with it. I think you will be happy with the finished results.
Posted by: Wanda at April 21, 2008 01:48 AMOne last suggestion about the "hook and eye" closures. Many years ago, at a Kolo Festival, I purchased a set of Alpine "bodice" fasteners. They were silvery-pewter metal with a stamped pattern. Try to picture an "S" hook that has been cut in half, flattened, has the cut ends flattened even more and pierced with two tiny holes (for sewing the hooks onto the garment. I think it cost me $2 or $3 American back in the 70's. They are very attractive; and they ornament the tips of my Kiri shawl so that I can "anchor" the tips anywhere onto the front and shoulders of the shawl OR link the hooks together in front or even at the back of neck.
Posted by: Bobbi at April 20, 2008 10:35 PMI Love the colour and it's looking good so far. I'm sure it'll look good on you. But I do hate it when the doubts set in. Maybe you'll be pleasantly surprised.
Posted by: Ling at April 20, 2008 09:49 PMIt's looking great! I can't wait to see the finished project. I'm sure a little steam will sort out the curling edges. It's quite a complicated knit!
