Arctic

The before and after of lace knitting is always magical. The arctic diamond shawl came off the needles like this.

The blocking took ages, and I even ran out of pins, which resulted in scalloping at some of the edges

I really wanted to open up the diamonds.

It really makes a difference, so much more impact, punch, whatever you call it.... this is what makes lace so addictive, compulsive even

This baby turned out ... big.. I mean massive. I did 9 repeats and it measured over 84 inches long and 30 inches wide. It was so big, that I really could not pose it on the chair. The shawl is light and it was windy... and the darn thing was so long that it dragged on the ground

In the end, I had to call for help, and the hubbler, obliged by taking some photos. See how big this thing is?

Am I just posing with the shawl or doing a Kung-fu Crane?

Against the black of my coat, it looks divine.

Finally, the arsty shots... because when I finish something as big as this, I can't help but go a bit nuts with the camera.

It's out of focus because of the wind, not my shakey hands.

So, all in all, a lovely pattern... The Arctic Diamond Stole by Donna Druchnas, featured in I'weave Winter '06, knitted up with 3 skeins of Malabrigo Lace in Sealing Wax. Thank you Dawn, for gifting me with a skein from your stash so that I would have enough for this project.

I had my eye on this when it was in the magazine. It's beautiful! I love the red! Now I am tempted to cast on some lace!

That's absolutely amazing. Those diamonds look great. That's really the beauty of lace. I know once I finished my last shawl, I couldn't wait to block it.

Utterly fabulous! I'm glad the hubbler was there to help out with the photos, because the more photos the better, as far as i am concerned!

You are right, it does look divine against the black of your coat. It is simply gorgeous.
(And may I also say your hair looks really glossy in that picture, it's lovely too!) x K

That is just stunning Polly ! I wish I could conquer my ineptitude with lace to make something this lovely :0)

How's your Sylph ? I'm moving along on mine - one front and most of the back done - but I want to lengthen the front as I'm not doing the ruffle. Do you think I could pick up and knit downwards in the rib and faggoting pattern or would that be too complicated ? What do you think ?

Inspiring. Breathtaking.

Polly, that is just stunning. You must be so pleased. I hope you have a special event planned for its first outing.

One word. Beautiful!

Beautiful work, Polly. Email me with your home address, and I'll send you a little something to go with the shawl.
(Donna Druchunas herself bought one of these 'little somethings' from us at Woolfest last year).

Gorgeous. And also really really wearable! And that can't be said about all lace, no matter how pretty.

Love the shawl. It's gorgeous.

Lovely stole - good job on the "artistic" photos and the roping in of the hubbler!

Posted by: AmyP at April 18, 2008 02:59 PM

The stole turned out beautifully - isn't that Malabrigo lace weight a dream?

Posted by: mary lou at April 18, 2008 02:32 PM

I quake before lace. It's really stunning.

Wow, it already looks great unblocked, but blocked it becomes gorgeous. The slight varigation in the yarn really makes it even more special.

Looks beautiful. I recommend investing in blocking wires for future lace projects.

Posted by: Katie K. at April 18, 2008 12:41 AM

you make the prettiest of lace Miss Polly!

Posted by: stinkerbell at April 18, 2008 12:36 AM

It's beautiful! Isn't it a nightmare trying to get good photos! I had to give up on one shawl because there was a slight breeze!

The Malabrigo particularly suits this pattern, it shows up the slight variation in colouring on the st st bits.

Great knitting!
