New Leaf

After the experience with the Latvian Socks from the Vogue Knitting Ultimate Socks book, I was seriously considering having the book sent back to Vogue and demanding that the send me a copy when they've finally sorted out the patterns. I don't demand perfect patterns, but I think that publishers have an obligation to proof read and to put out corrections promptly.

Although I had written Vogue Knitting multiple times, they have only acknowledged me once, and that was to say that they hadn't received my queries. I responded by sending all the changes to them again... and again heard back nothing. I checked to see whether the errata was added recently and still nothing new, just the correction on the charts, that were there prior to December. So my experience has not been good.

Nonetheless, I started another pattern. Sometimes, I think I'm a glutton for punishment. This pattern is the Leaf Lace Socks by Susan. I figure that if there is an error, I could write Susan and she would have a better chance than me to getting Vogue Knitting to put on an errata.

So, I cast on and was off. The pattern is well written and appears to be error free. I tend to be a tight knitter, so, I cast on 4 more stitches than directed and worked the additional stitches as ribbing around the front panel.

In no time at all, I had a finished sock

The picot cuff works well with the delicate lace

and the lacy ladders made a nice change from stocking stitch or ribbing. It's not as stretchy as ribbing though, so I would advise that you try on the socks to make sure that they go over your heels. I did read about a few people on ravelry finding the sock a bit tight to pull over the heel... but with sock patterns, unless one has experience in knowing what works, trying on the socks is really important.

While I love the look of the patridge eye stitch, it's not one that I use often.

I finished the second sock last night and took the artsy photo late this morning.

It's not often that we get snow in April (well, it doesn't snow that often in the south of England, no matter what month), so I had to get a photo with the snow in it.

I really like these socks. The yarn looks really soft and the pattern is lovely. I thought it was a gansey sock at first. The cables are lovely.

They are pretty, and in one of my favorite basic sheepy colors too. Snow! Wee, bet it didn't stick around long.

Lovely socks!
I got so frustrated with that Vogue book I gave up.
I'm not a whiz at knitting socks so need an accurate pattern to follow.
Still, this give me hope. I'm going to give it a go.

P.S. As we're now in full srping mode - tulips and all beginning, you can keep any trace of the white stuff.

Beautiful socks! I'm glad that pattern turned out well. Amazing to see snow in London!!

I love them, they look absolutely perfect and soft and comfy (especially with the snow in the backdrop).
I too hate it when there are mistakes in patterns, and even more when they appear in books. It is annoying, but even more so, when they won't acknowledge the mistake.
Good luck with your battle!

That's to bad about the Vogue Knitting book. That's the second person I've heard have something to say about the errors in the book.

The socks turned out lovely and look nice against the snow backdrop.

I've heard others mention the eye of partridge heel flap before but have never used it until recently. Now I really love it, especially for variegated yarns. It makes those colors really stand out, imo.

Lovely socks. I wonder how many other people are going to post outdoors snow shots from today? (I did!). I must have another look at this book.

I've been trying to find a decent photo of the Eye of Partridge heel stitch for weeks now. Thanx for some great photos of some great knitting! Last week I ended up making "samplers" out of the heels of my latest pair of socks: four different directions for "Eye of Partridge" and four different views of when to start the first row of the pattern: inside (purl) of heel flap", outside "stockinette side" etc. etc. I was amazed to find how often the EoP heel was knitted with multi-colored yarns. You (and Vogue) got it right this time: beautiful!

The snow is a perfect backdrop!!

I've been watching the snow falling during the Olympic torch-relay on the news - it's very odd to see that kind of weather in London!
The socks do look lovely (against the snow or otherwise!)
