Mojo

Well, it would appear that my sock knitting mojo has well and trully absconded, probably with Karen's sock knitting mojo. One only hope that they return to their respective places when they come to their sense and the thrill of their big adventure have worn off.

Sock stash pining away for sock knitting mojo?

I find keeping photo albums of what I have knitted on a yearly basis to be really interesting. I can see a progression into lace, squares for charity blankets, hats and in the past couple of years socks. Recently, I seem to be getting back into colour, as rusty intarsia skills are re-honed and attempts have been made to deal with the dreaded stranded knitting. Stranded knitting is definitely my achilles heel. I thought that it really wouldn't matter because strong horizontals never suited anyone but the most willowy, but the desire to conquer this inadequacy has been building up.

So in honour of Thanksgiving, a Thanksgiving story.

Many, many years ago, I made a thanksgiving turkey for my friends. I didn't know how big of a turkey to get, but as it was for 10, I estimated that the guys would be big eaters so I went with a 21 lb bird. Do you how much stuffing you need for a 21 lb bird? I could barely lift the tray after the bird was stuffed. I was very careful to make sure that the bird was thorougly cooked and that the breast was not dry and stringy, so I got up at 5am to prepare and to cook on low heat with constant basting.

At 2pm we were starving and ready to eat. The gravy was piping hot and the bird was 'rested'. I thought to decant the stuffing to make the serving easier. As I was decanting, I noticed a plastic bag. I had no idea what this plastic bag was, as I did not put it inside the bird. Well, it turns out that I should had taken the giblets out before I stuffed and cooked the darn thing. Now, how was I supposed to know that? This should had been written on the label or in my cookbook. To this day, I still get emails from my friends every year, reminding me to take the giblets out. So the moral of the story is, check the turkey for giblets before you cook it...and if you haven't done that, decant the stuff without witnesses.

Happy Thanksgiving!

funny story! Lucky for me, I have never been the one responsible for the turkey. My poor husband tried to do the family Christmas turkey once. The poor lad had no experience. That turkey just wouldn't cook through. In the end, he rang up his best friend's mum and asked her to come over and figure out the turkey. It was the driest thing on earth when it was done, after about 12 hours! Needless to say, he has not been invited to make the family Christmas turkey again!

At our friend's house for Thanksgiving, my dh pointed out to me that the giblets were left in the package. That is definitely an easy one to forget. The first turkey I made, all of my work friends kept telling me not to forget to take out the giblets, so I was lucky to have the advice.

I did the same thing with my first turkey. Well, and one or two after that as well. Sometimes they hide those little bags and you just don't find them until after the bird is done. I don't see how they can hide them, there aren't that many places to hide them. Are there?

Not only have I cooked a bird with the giblets left in, I've also cooked it with that pad thing in the packaging stuck to its underside. Now that is embarrassing!

Happy Thanksgiving, Polly, have a super one!

He he he, a quite funny story, though I think everybody has a story like that to tell.
I might suspect my own sock-mojo to have eloped to your place since so much gorgeous sock yarn resides there... but I will attempt to lure it back by buying some goodies at a Christmas fair on Sunday!!!

Happy Thanksgiving Polly! I sure am thankful to have stumbled upon your blog!

How funny! But I've heard many people tell a similar
story so you're not alone!

Happy Thanksgiving Polly!
