Living In Limbo

I have this unnatural obsession with sock yarn that is composed of different coloured multi-strands of yarn, plied together. It started at the end of 2005, when I knit myself a pair of Limbo socks.

It's odd that I love this type of yarn so much for socks, but don't feel the same obsession about using it for larger garments.

I have since found myself buying more and more yarns like this (some shaded, others just plied throughout in different colours) and have a strong urge to acquire the Trekking Ombres in every colourway for myself). I continued to feed my frenzy, and bought more twisted plied sock yarn when I was in Germany from Rödel. Recently, I've noticed the Tofutsies and while I am forcing myself to not acquire any new yarns while I sort the state of my stash, I did look here more than I would care to admit in the past few weeks.

This brings to mind a scene from Moonstruck between Cher and Nicolas Cage.

Ronny Cammareri: I'm in love with you.
Loretta Castorini: [slapping him] Snap out of it!

While picking away on the FPS last week, I managed to finally finishes these lovelies for me. It's taken nearly a month, which is a lot longer than it should for something this nice. This is the most gorgeous wool. It's Stahl Sche Wolle in color 9185 (socka Color). It looks grey but when you take it out to daylight, the blues really come out. I was very lucky to have been given this yarn from a knitting friend that seems to share my fascination with these types of yarns, well in fact we share a love of the same colours of yarns .. loving the greens, blues and burgundies.

I've used my limbo pattern, up-sizing it for the sockweight yarn by casting on 66 stitches

Here is the artsy shot. I am most disappointed that I've finished this, just in time for the warm weather....

Love the socks! I'm clicking on that pattern link for sure. I ran across Tofutsies on vacation and had to buy it. Haven't knit with it yet, but the sample pair at the shop was very soft and surprisingly pretty!

Love the socks. Can't wait to see if you try the Tofutsies - I'm holding out until I see more knitted up. Hope the new sock yarn arrived with Jill and that you are pleased with it.

I totally understand the appeal! :-) Besides, with yarn of this sort I don't feel compelled to try to make them match exactly, because it's a losing proposition. (Well, I may still try, but not too hard. ;-)

Oh my I love those. I love those types of yarns too. There is nothing wrong with woolen socks in warm weather...almost makes me want to wear them with sandals.......almost.

I remember seeing Moonstruck when it first came out - I think I was a bit too young to appreciate it. Upon watching it years later (and a marriage and divorce later), that scene - and the scene where he's talking about how love is like a wolf (I think!) - is SO much funnier, sweeter, sadder, better.

I agree with the last commentator - you did you yarn with the right amount of variation without overdoing it... so nice!

Such lovely "moonstruck"-y colors in the socks. It's a theme! I dated a guy in high school that looked and sounded just like the Nick Cage character! Doesn't hurt to have had a Sicilian grandfather either. :)

I've fallen in love with those ombre shades from Trekking too. I finished a pair of socks about a year or so ago that was in some of the old Fortissima sock yarn and it had shades of brown, an odd light purplish color fading into brown and I love them. Those are great socks. Thanks for the limbo pattern too. I've got that one saved.

I love the sock yarn and the finished socks too!

I use the type of yarn for socks that I'd never use for outer-wear. I think of socks as hidden little secrets.

I agree with Amy -- just the right amount of variation. Nice!

And there was me thinking you lived in London! No, seriously.
Lovely socks. Just the right amount of variation in the yarn without over-powering the pattern.
