Back in July, during the annual Liberty Sales, I had mentioned the slim pickings.
Unheard of, (for me) to only buy 4 balls of yarns. I bought the Gedifra Fashion Trend Stripe for £2.25 specifically for hats, but I wasn't 100% sure that I would have enough yarn for a hat, since each ball was only 90 meters. I am delighted to report that you can make a hat out of about 89 meters...and here's the proof.
Everyone and everyone and everyone had made Grumperina's> Odessa. So I guess, I'm late to the party again.
Most Odessas were made with beads or plain-ish yarn so, I thought to try it without beads and in self striping just to see how it'll look. I thought that beads might be too fussy for the colourful yarn.

I did have to change the pattern sightly since the yarn was thicker. I cast-on one less repeat. The swirling pattern looks gorgeous with with colour changes. I rather like the Gedirfra Fashion Trend Stripe. Although not 100% wool, it much, much softer than the Noro. I wonder if it was discontinued becuase Wendy yarn had launched the similar looking but cheaper version calledFusion?
I found the hat a little short for my head, but it'll be fine for my god-daughter. I prefer my hats to cover the tips of my ears and this one just doesn't make it.
Imagine my surprise when I took this photo, isn't the striping yarn pretty with the decreases giving it a star shape on top. I had to practice a bit of contortion photography to get this photo, but it was worth it.

I immediately cast on another Odessa for the BISS Project. This time, I added an inch and a half to length before starting the decreases.

The swirls still look gorgeous.

A great pattern that you should be able to achieve with just 50g of DK weight yarn with minimal finishing... what more could a knitter ask for?

Posted by: Diana at November 10, 2006 08:47 PMThat's such a cute hat in the variegated yarn. I do like the hat, but thought I would never do the beads, so this gives me another option. Don't know why I never thought about it before, but I do love how yours worked up.
Posted by: Wanda at November 9, 2006 07:53 PMThats so cool, the variegated yarn does give a nice look to it. That's one funky star on the hat!
Posted by: Rain at November 8, 2006 01:01 PMThey both look great - the star effect is an extra bonus!
I love a good hat pattern...
The Odessa hats look great. The star pattern in the variegated run is really cool. I live in California, so I don't need a wool hat, but if I did, I would knit a colored Odessa!
Posted by: Brenda at November 7, 2006 11:49 PMYour Odessas look great. The pattern looks so effective in the variegated yarn too, I wouldn't have known.
Posted by: Kathleen at November 7, 2006 08:51 PMLove it in the self-striping. I need to make another one for my daughter so I'll give that a try. I'm going to do another one for the local homeless project. Thank you for continuing to update us on your BISS projects as a reminder for charity knitting.

Posted by: Debi at November 7, 2006 01:02 AMHow pretty! I like both hats! The Odessa has been on my list for a while but I've not gotten around to it. Maybe this winter...
Posted by: Elinor at November 7, 2006 12:28 AMBoth hats are wonderful. I'm particularly entraced by the striped one; I'll have to try that myself sometime. : )
