I cannot believe that I have to wait until Thursday before I get my next Lonesome Dove fix... so I reckon that I have to get the the sewing done before Thursday because there is no way .. that I am going to be able sew (which requires looking at the fabric) when my eyes will be firmly affixed on Gus and Woodrow.
Now, when I said interesting construction, I mean 'interesting' construction. The pattern instructs you to knit 1x1 rib until you are ready to jump off the nearest bridge. Then you increase 'a whole bunch of stitches' (yes, this is a technical term) and do 2 x 2 rib.

The increasing gives a distinct iline.

Then you pick up some stitches for the sleeves and do 1 x1 rib (again, the chinese water torture)... until you get to the increases and the 2 x2 rib , which would be a relief and then you notice that the knitting is just as alow becuse there are a lot more stitches per row than with the 1 x1 rib.

There were a few mid row yarn joins required. I don't usually join mid-row but I bought 9 balls of yarns and there were none other in the same dyelot at John Lewis. (A few of those joins were also joins in the ball.. very annoying too). With the stretch ribbing construction it was hard to estimate if I was going to end up with too long pieces (and run out of yarn), so I had to join mid-row. But I must point out that is is easy to hide joins in ribbing.
Here is a better idea of what Florence will look like after she's sewn up. Just need to finish this sleeve and get the other one in and we will be almost done!

Project is working up amazingly quickly...even I am stunned at the speed that this is going.
This is so lovely Polly! Beautiful color!! Why don't you do a Russian Join instead of worrying where to weave ends? It's life altering I tell ya!! :)
Posted by: Debi at April 22, 2006 06:48 AMAh, a testiment to your sticktoitiveness as we say, sometimes, here in Chicago. Hooray for you. It is a beautiful ribbed garment. Love the color
Posted by: kathy b at April 20, 2006 01:56 AMOh my goodness, I'm so envious of the speed of your ribbing. The pattern looks gorgeous and I love the colour. I am working on a 2x1 ribbed Debbie Bliss cardigan and I'm miles behind you. I did find your comments on the ribbing not looking very neat to be reassuring as I have the same concerns with mine. The sheen of that Cathay is fantastic, I think yours is going to look better than the pattern photograph.
Posted by: Rebecca at April 19, 2006 09:34 PMI still think Jill was knitting this... must ask her to comment! It looks very impressive indeed. How about a st.st. cap or some plain socks for LD watching?
Posted by: dawn at April 19, 2006 03:01 PMI find ribbing sooooo tedious to do, but your Florence is coming out so well I may be inspired to make one too!
Posted by: Ellen at April 19, 2006 01:24 PMthat looks lovely!
I've done the vintage one (free online somewhere, done the rounds) which is similar without the arms, and this pattern looks like it'd be much better fitting
Posted by: aice at April 19, 2006 12:34 PMshe's looking great polly! your description of this project just makes me want to rush out and start one myself. either that or maybe i should still a hot needle through my eye.
Posted by: jacqueline at April 19, 2006 10:19 AMI love the colour and sheen of the cathay you have chosen, beautiful! But how are you coping with all that ribbing without becoming a gibbering wreck? You obviously have the patience of a saint.
Posted by: Louise at April 19, 2006 01:04 AMI'm so impressed! Beautiful work. You're going at it much faster than I can believe, all that ribbing.... but seeing your photos really helps me to understand the construction. I was thinking about making this for my daughter, but ... all that ribbing....
Posted by: KarenK at April 19, 2006 12:22 AMIt must require the patience of a saint to knit all. that. ribbing.
Posted by: Beth S. at April 19, 2006 12:17 AMI saw a sample of the garment in the U.S. and it is so much nicer in the 'flesh' than in the pattern book. And such a great colour ... I make just have to sneak it from you...... ;-)
Posted by: Jacinta at April 18, 2006 10:46 PMThat sounds rather painful to knit. Your a better woman than me.
Posted by: Debbie at April 18, 2006 10:33 PMIt looks quite intriquing, your technical terms and all just add to the mystique... I expect to see you frolicking in it soon :)
Posted by: stinkerbell at April 18, 2006 10:26 PMI'm impressed! It seems to be going pretty fast for you. You'll be wearing it before you know it, and we expect pictures of it! Nice job.
