Lumberjack

I've done my 2 hats.

I've done this hat with the intention that the ribbing would be folded up. However, this means that only the tips of the ears are to be covered.

If you want your ears to stay warm, you're going to have to pull down that fold.

Photography in the winter time is dire. I mean, it's dark when I get up, dark when I walk to the station, dark when I walk to the office from the tube... and know what? dark when I do it in reverse to get home.

After several poses in front of the mirror, minus flash and little success...

Honest, both these hats are the same size.

I finally asked the husband for help.

Not one word about the lumberjack jacket. It's quilted and very warm. In this house when you're cold, you don't get the thermostat turned up, you go and put on another jacket!

and what does he do? he makes me look like an extra from Rosemary's Baby.

It you want the hat pattern, here's what I did:

Yarn : 100g ball Jaeger Shetland Aran (it's shetland/alpaca blend, so very soft)
Tension: 18 x24 over 10cm/4 inches square
Needles: 4.5mm dpns or circular

Cast on 80 stitches.
Work 2 inches 2x2 rib : *k2,p2* repeat * to *
Work 5.5 inches in stocking stitch (knit every round)

Start crown:

Round 1 : *k2 tog, k6* repeat * to * 10 times
Round 2 and all even rounds : k
Round 3 : *k2tog, k5* repeat * to * 10 times
Round 5 : *k2tog, k4* repeat * to * 10 times
Round 7 : *k2tog, k3* repeat * to * 10 times
Round 9 : *k2tog, k2* repeat * to * 10 times
Round 11 : *k2tog, k1* repeat * to * 10 times
Round 13 : *k2tog* repeat * to * 10 times

Leaving a 6 inch tail cut yarn and draw through the 10 remaining stitches. Secure yarn by darning into the hat.

As a general guideline, I used approx 125g for 2 hats, so if you have 2 balls of this yarn, you should be able to make 3 hats. Why is this important? Because lots of yarn come in 50g balls and you will very likely need more than 1 ball.

Isn't that sheltand so soft and warm? and what's with the lumberjack jacket? Where are your hand knitted woollies?

Polly, you look adorable, even as a Lumberjack!! Cute hats!

Great hats Polly. Photographs in this weather are difficult aren't they? I think the bear offsets any potential horror film likeness.

A bit of red eye is the norm with my camera! You couldn't look like an extra for RB even if you tried, you're too cute!

Those hats are great - I don't do hats, but during this current cold snap I'm worrying less about appearances and more about warmth, and I do have a lovely warm one knitted from a Bea Ellis Kit. And there's nothing wrong with the photo a bit of red-eye reduction wouldn't cure; both you and the bear look amazingly warm and cosy.

Very cute! I read that it's definitely hat weather in the UK these days.

Cute hats! There's nothing wrong with an extra jacket and a pair of wool socks inside down slippers. Have a good day.
