Blinded by the light

Thanks to Sue for getting me the blue Opal Uni and addis, so quickly.

I thought that the opal was a bit rough, so I washed it and conditioned it with a bit of pantene. It really softened up a treat.

I'd decided to do Devan with the blue solid colour and the patch detail. Sometimes, I'm not sure why I bother to block it. Can you tell that the bottom one has been blocked and the top one hasn't?

As I suspected, even with blocking the wonky stitches stayed wonky. That's the problem being out of practice with intarsia.

Now sure what happened but there are an awful lot of ends to sew in. Horrifying really. Can you see how much those hems roll? honest, after blocking, they will be FLAT.

Here's the artistic shot...

This is the 6-12 month size and I was amazed at how big that it looked. The only change that I'd made to the original pattern was to change the stocking stitch edging to a garter stitch one. I'm not a great fan of rolling hems. I've bought buttons, but the problem is I'd bougth 6 and need 7. I also wanted to take the photos before it got darker, or started to rain. There hasn't been much knitting here, so not much to show really. I'm also amazed at how bright this thing looks and am now getting cold feet about shipping it to the baby that I've knitted it for. Don't you hate that? all the hard work to finish it and then doubts at the last moment!

It looks lovely! I am planning to make one for my son, and debating the color choice with myself: and I think yours looks lovely!

Beautiful, you know how much I love colour ;-)

That is the cutest thing ever! I love the blue back to it most of all :)

I'm at the point in my Devan to start the edging. Will definitely take your advice to do the garter stitch instead. Notghing like the wisdom of other knitters to help a project along. It looks great!

Great cardi. Wonderful color combination.

Send it! It's beautiful. (And my 5yo saw the picture and said "Can you knit a rainbow sweater like that for me?" High praise indeed since it isn't even pink!)

Send it! Send it! You did a wonderful job. The baby will look great in it.

Posted by: Carol at December 5, 2005 02:52 AM

Don't hesitate for a moment but get it sent! Babies look great in bright colours and both mum and baby will be very happy with it, who wouldn't be? Your work is fantastic, as always.

The cardigan's wonderful. It's just that you do quite a lot of baby stuff in neutral colours and you're not used to bright! The baby will certainly prefer this bright cardigan!

The cardigan looks beautiful. Do not hesitate in sending it. Remember that the mother will appreciate all the handknitted items you make, and that it is something that the baby will not have been given by anyone else. It looks so cute, and babies grow very quickly so it will fit.

It's so darling! Don't hesitate to send it on. Any baby would be so cute in that sweater.

Posted by: margene at December 4, 2005 09:27 PM

It looks lovely Polly. Bright is good for babies, as is a little big - makes it easier to get on.

You make the loveliest little baby knits!

I've wanted to make Devan forever. Now I really want to make it NOW. Luckily I don't have any self-striping sock yarn lying around. Or do I? xoxo Kay

That's a really delightful cardigan. Lucky baby !
A lovely colour and beautifully knitted.

That is really lovely, and yes, you can tell the difference in the pre- and the post- blocked one.

Posted by: Kathleen at December 4, 2005 06:36 PM

I love it too, and you shouldn't have any doubts at all!
Bigger sizes for baby knits is just great you know. In the beginnning you can always roll up the sleeves.
Best wishes from Germany

Devan is adorable! Truly! The colours are superb and would be lovely on a baby. But then again I'm Canadian and we are supposed to be partial to bright colours because supposedly our landscape is so bleak and dull for so much of the year.

You really shouldn't have any doubts - it looks beautiful. I always think kids look great in bright colours. It's fantastic, really!

Posted by: carolyn0710 at December 4, 2005 05:14 PM

I read somewhere that babies are more stimulated by bright and high contrast colors. You did a great job, and your photos did a wonderful pictorial of why one should block!

What a nice present for a lucky baby's mom!

It looks great. The blue was a good choice. And big is always good, in knitting for kids. Lovely.

It's lovely - you've created an heirloom sweater.
