Moonlight Sonata

Not Beethoven's but Ivy Bigelow's...may I present the freshly knitted, just blocked and ready-to-wear Midwest Moonlight from Scarf Style.

It was a really quick and really easy knit. I did mine with some merlot coloured silk that was given to me ages ago. It's sportsweight so not too thin and not too thick, on 5mm needles. Now there is silk and there is silk, this silk is bourette, soft with a sheen but with a consistency closer to unmercerised cotton than the slippery silk that one associates with Jaeger's 4 ply silk.

..Midwest Moonlight..
Isn't it delicate?

Once blocked, moonlight was approxiximate 10 inches wide by 62 inches, which makes it more than a reasonable size scarf. I stopped after 20 repeats, since I thought that it was long enough.

What's the best way to wear this scarf? Well, due to lack of model, I strong-armed my bear to take part in the photo-shoot. This isn't just any bear, he can hold a pose, doesn't mind modelling in the nude and costs significantly less than the $10,000 a day that the likes of some 'supers' reputedly demand.

..Midwest Moonlight..
Folded and tucked

He doesn't party much either so, you'll not likely to see him in any papers, committing any indiscretions.

..Midwest Moonlight..
Just draped around the neck.

Scarf Style = cool book. Who would had thought that I would love a scarf book? Definitely, not me.

I didn't think I'd like a scarf book, either, but I really like Scarf Style. Your Midwest Moonlight looks wonderful.

Scarf Style is a wonder. So many excellent projects (though there's aclunker or two in there, certainly; there always is.)

I just love that vibrant red.

I agree with Kay - modern lace. It looks absolutely terrific Polly. I love the scarf style book, I first came across it in my local library and just had to buy it after renewing it twice...

I shall have to look again at this pattern. Yours is so much nicer than the one in the book.

I hadn't given this pattern a second glance until I saw your version. I've found so many projects in that book that I'd love to dive into. So very lovely!

dear one: i love this scarf so much - and like one of your other writers would never have homed in on it, unless you knit it. your blog continues to "deliver" so much in the way of enjoyment. thank you!
love the bear. I, too, have two bear models, but mine are very outdoor bears and not nearly as refined as yours! hence, mine have rugged garter stitch scarfs on - perfect for ct. winters but not city types at all.
love to you - come to ny soon. we need your sweet spirit here.

I was never fussed about this pattern until I saw yours. It's what I've been looking for: Modern Lace. Love it. Must have some of that for myself. xoxo Kay

The scarf is beautiful, but I'm in love with the bear, isn't he wonderful, does he do much modelling.

Lovely! I gave up on that scarf because I had chosen the wrong yarn... may revisit it after seeing howlovely yours turned out.

midwest moonlight is gorgeous! i am with you on scarf style - i actually didn't buy it for ages because i didn't think i would use it...but i have actually used it more than any other knitting pattern book i owe. (technical books exempted of course!)

The scarf came out beautifully - the silk sounds like it works well for this scarf. I am working on the same in a solid cotton. I first tried a variegated (Axelle's merino) - no go! This is a scarf I think, for solid color yarns.

But it seems like you have a nice drape going and I should too - I guess it's the knit pattern. Thanks for sharing - always really enjoy seeing and reading KAP!

I'm starting to like Scarf Style more and more. Your scarf is so pretty. And those models? I've got a bevy of them at home, and they don't bicker either. Love to use them for baby stuff! :)

Beautiful scarf Polly!! Wonderful color for you, I'll bet it looks smashing!

This scarf is lovely! Maybe I should invest in this scarf book too...

Posted by: francoise at September 25, 2005 12:02 AM

I love that book too! I've been drooling over it at the yarn store and know I am going to end up getting it someday :) I love the one you did too, it looks so lovely on the bear :)

I've seen many of these knitted at a far tighter gauge, and this one looks so lovely and lacy, very different! Looks like tumbling blocks...almost Escher...I love it!

....and he doesn't appear to have a boyfriend that spits or sings with Elton John at large gatherings! It's a gorgeous scarf and one I shall be adding to my list of must haves. Everytime I visit, you make my list longer.
