Yes, it's true, I miss Tina, so what'a girl to do but to cast on another lace project. Here is the beginning of the Kerry Blue Shawl from Martha Waterman's Traditional Knitted Lace Shawls book, recommended to me by Thos, many, many moons ago.
The technique employed here is to cast on, join and knit from the center outwards, a much more fiddly approach than knitting the center and picking up stitches.

I didn't have any blue yarn so my shawl will be in a loden green (sometimes it looks green, sometimes it looks brown). I am definitely keeping this shawl for me, me, me.. It's a very serviceable design, the type that I can take with me when I fly so it'll do double duty as a blanket too, when it gets chilly in-flight.
It's not that lacy, more substantial than Tina.

I had an irrational moment when I almost bought more yarn to do this shawl. Thank goodness, Alpaca Woman's words came to mind (the stash is there to be used....) The shawl in the book suggested 16 oz of yarn and I weighted this green yarn that I had and it came out to be about 18oz. I had to quash the thoughts of 'I'll have 2-3 oz left when I'm done, what a waste, I should go get exactly 16 oz'. Clearly, what good is stash if it never gets used.

Good luck to you all on the yarn draw, I'll let the winner knows, when the Geek is good and ready. Probably thinks it good to keep us waiting!
Thanks to everyone, who's left Geek some birthday wishes..... I am sooooo dead... when my birthday next comes around.... I've had my fun and am soooo not looking forward to paying the piper in 2006!
Ohhhh... I see now. I thought maybe you gave up on it early and had made a lovely pillow out of it! I think it would make a wonderful pillow. :)
Posted by: Laura at September 3, 2005 10:18 PMThat book is what got me started on shawl knitting. That shawl was the first I ever knit.
And yes, those first rounds on DPNs are fiddly to say the least!
Posted by: Thomas at September 3, 2005 10:33 AMthere lots of corrections for this shawl on interweave web site

Posted by: Marie at September 2, 2005 04:53 PMVery nice. I really love that book not only for the patterns, but just the infor on basic construction is excellent.
Posted by: Rebekah at September 2, 2005 04:51 PMI started this shawl once, with some lace yarn that turned out to be way too fine for the project. I realized I was in trouble when I was about 2/3 done, yet the shawl was approximately the size of a handkerchief. ;-) Just a word to the wise... if your yarn is on the fine side you may need to work some extra repeats.
Posted by: Beth S. at September 2, 2005 04:47 PMWhat about a lacy cap or bag with the "extra" 2-3 oz? Or a gift scarf or lacy little sachets to get a head start on holiday knitting? See, it's a bonus not a waste! Can't wait to see what the Geek has planned for your next birthday!
