Go With the Flow

Inspired by Anna, something new and exciting translated into the Go With the Flow socks by Evelyn Clark.

..Go with the Flow Socks..
from Interweave Summer 2005.

I am amazed at how quickly these socks are working up. If Interweave promised to publish an Evelyn Clark pattern in every issue, I'm going to sign up now for a life long subscription.

.. and here's some proof that not all weeds are bad.

I added this to show you what this little poppy looks like when the flower is opened. In my opinion, very pretty, but Rowanette Jill is right, a bit of research in my Horticulture books does indicate that this is a Californian not Welsh orange Poppy

This little thing managed to spring up in my border. I looked into growing them years ago, but they can be quite invasive so I'd resisted. Imagine my surprise to see one growing where I would had planted on. Well, if it likes shade, is resistant to slugs and snails and can overwhelm the other weeds, it's invited to stay as long as it'll like.

(Note, most of the green stuff around the poppy is weed.)

looks actually like my poppies, i was lead to beleive that it is a welsh poppy, and it isnt a calfornian poppy ive grown them and they look competely different, but ive been recently told that welsh poppys are yellow. I live in wales too , does that make any difference ?

Nice sock. First I thought variegated yarn didn't look right (mine's variegated too but all the others I'd seen weren't), but now I'm not so sure. It's good to see another variegated one.

While I will leave the proper ID to a horticulturist, I agree with Cruz. That does not look like any California poppy I ever saw!

lol, orange poppy...

well, I can't dispute that, although it does look kind of yellow on my screen. ;-)

I have lived in Californis most of my life and have always loved the California poppy. The flower in your pic does not resemble a California poppy.

I knit those up myself, and your right, they knit up very quickly and really kept my interest. Plus they just are cute. Ms. Clark is a great sock designer.

We've got tons of wonderful poppies like that around our place. They're just growing wildly, and I don't recall us having so many last year, so you may be right about them being really invasive (could it have been due to my attempt at planting them a couple of years ago, or is it seeds flying over from other full fields of them a few miles away?). But, hey, when something is that pretty, I say let it invade a little.

I love those socks :)

Love the poppy pictures... And that sock! Wow.. Super nice. Where is that pattern published if I might ask and what yarn are you using?

Posted by: Dani at May 31, 2005 12:06 AM

I think it is a Welsh poppy! The Californian ones grow in drier places and have grey filigree leaves. They do grow in paving cracks and like the sun, whereas Welsh ones (as one might guess!) don't mind a bit of shade and damp. Perhaps you can tell by where they're growing? Oh yes, like the sock too.

those socks are gorgeous...I plan on knitting the exact same pair as soon as I get the current pair off the needles. Now knowing you Polly - you would probably be thinking why should that stop me!

What makes you say a Welsh Poppy, Polly? We have several of these, they grow in the cracks of the path, I never planted any, I understood they were Californian poppies....I have seen hill-sides covered with them in California!

Pleased to say we have fox-gloves this year, arrived from nowhere......

Love the socks (of course!) - I've got those on my future sock list.
I've never heard of a Welsh Poppy! Sounds like you might have to keep your eyes on this!

I glanced at the picture and thought that you had some kind of fungi growing on the tree stump. What a pretty colour for a poppy. A.xx
