Safe in My Garden

The difference between natural light and pictures in a darkish house with a flash. The shawl actually looks purple, not some shade of chocolate brown. (not that I have anything against chocolate or browns). What the pciture doesn't capture is the subtities of the yarn, that gives the purple its depth. I can see why so many people love shetland wools.

...voila! ..

I've stretched it out along the fence to show the proportions off. I ended up with a shawl that was between the small and large size, because I thought that it was the right length/width. Not because I got bored working with it.

...voila! ..

Against, all expectations, my hydrangea is still leafy. I tried photographing the shawl on top of the hydrangea but it was too big and didn't work, so I put it beside the hydrangea.

...voila! ..

Only with a close-up can you really see how the beads look. I couldn't find any purple ones, so I went with glass beads with silver foil. It's kind of subtle. The shawl came out much warmer than I'd thought and although slightly felted (yes, you can tell), it's feels much fuller than on the needles.

...voila! ..

Your shawl is BEAUTIFUL! I just "discovered" your blog whilst searching for the "Kiri Shawl". Where did you get the pattern? I think I need to do one now the holiday madness is over, Thanks - Jamie

Hi Alice
to add beads, when you get to the cast-off rown, get a sewing thread, needle and your beads. You will bead each of the pointed stitch and 1 stitch in from the first and last stitch.

For the stitch that you are planning to bead, thread the thread through the loop. Thread both ends of the thread through the needle, insert bead, put stitch back on needle and remove thread. Now work cast-off as you will for other stitches. Yes, it's tedious, but the effect is nice, so I think worth the tedium.

What a stunning shawl, Polly. Fashions come and fashions go, but something like that will stand the test of time. Very inspiring.

Gorgeous!!

What a stunning shawl that is! And what a fabulous colour! I'm envious! You obviously know what you're doing with a pair of knitting needles, there's absolutely no doubt about that. My hydrangea is still in leaf (just about), too. The leaves have gone a lovely shade of pink and look quite pretty. ~Sharon

Hi Polly! your shawl is just lovely and co-inka-dink, i'm knitting it too!! got me some Lorna's Lace's sport in Neon for socks and when the yarn arrived it told me it needed to be a Leaf Lace Shawl! Now it's in the same family but a *distant* relative since Neon is a deep hot pink, a warm saturated yellow and and bright orange!!! LOL! Sounds garish but it really is lovely....you think beads would be over the top? hehe....my last project was Madli's shawl from the Fall IK, that was very fun to knit, I think you would love it!!

Polly, your shawl looks fantastic and such a stunning colour, but weren't you risking it putting it on the fence where THAT squirrel could get at it?

Posted by: Louise at November 17, 2004 02:24 PM

Polly the shawl is beautiful! Makes me want to call in sick and spend the day knitting!

Your Flower Basket Shawl looks beautiful! The beads you added give "un je-ne-sais-quoi" (as we say in French :)...), it's perfect! And the colour is lovely... Greetings from Belgium :)!

Polly, I'm in love with your garden. It looks like it were the perfect location for the next Rowan shooting. (I love the shawl, too, of course)

i was actually hoping to add beads to my flower basket shawl, but was unsure how to go about it. any tips?

Posted by: alice at November 17, 2004 04:52 AM

Polly, it's so gorgeous! I'm sure you look like a million bucks in it... Lately whenever I've visited, I've left wanting to try lace like Theresa. :) I may just have to try it.

Posted by: Holly at November 17, 2004 03:18 AM

Every time I come here I leave wanting to knit lace. The shawl -- both in pattern and in color -- is gorgeous!

Posted by: Theresa at November 17, 2004 02:27 AM

It's gorgeous! But you didn't need me to tell you that. Pattern available soon?

Posted by: chris at November 17, 2004 02:19 AM

Polly--I keep imagining some neighbor sticking her head over the top of that fence and going, WHAT THE HECK. You are insane and I love you. The colors of both shawls are amazing. The beads, wow (I thought at first that you had PINNED the shawl to the fence, which had me a little worried).

I have been 'borrowing' a certain co-blogger's Birch and I am amazed that something so light and floaty can be so warm. I have to have one. I may even have to MAKE one. Awaiting Polly's EZ As Pie Birch Recipe. xoxox Kay

Hi Polly, Great shawl ! I love the colour. You are knit really fast. I remember you have quite a lot of lace shawl FOs this year.

Posted by: Eva Shiu at November 17, 2004 01:13 AM

WOW. I blink and you have two shawls up. They're both beautiful, beautiful, gorgeous. Gotta go back to the pictures and drool.

Posted by: valentina at November 17, 2004 12:59 AM

It's beautiful! The beads add a really nice touch--wish I had thought of that! :)

Posted by: Toni at November 17, 2004 12:56 AM

Beautiful shawl! I love the deep color. Eagerly awaiting news on Birch! I've been tinking with the pattern and can't get it the way I want.

Posted by: Jackie at November 16, 2004 11:35 PM

It looks really beautiful Polly. And as Chris looks over my shoulder, he recognises it as one I've knitted - big step in Knitting Awareness!
Are we going to see it at Libertys?

Dawn :)
PS Love the colour!
