Extremities Exchange
My exchange thingy arrived today and what can I say? I squealed with delight, stroked it several times, inhaled deeply again and again, heard the neighbour pound on the door (embarrassingly to check if everything was OK) and sat down and had a Paddington kind of a meal.
Rowanette Judith has really made me the most delightful thingy. A most wonderful Kid Silk Haze shawl in Liquor. Now how did she know that, that's my favourite shade of Kid Silk Haze? The rest of my package then continued to tantalise each of my senses. Was she clairvoyant and did she realise that my neighbour would come over thinking that I had disturbed a burgular or something? The very best bit? Well, it was the marmalade. I mean, only my mother-in-law make marmalade. Marmalade is the spread of the gods. It was pure ambrosia. I waited for the breeze to pick up for this picture, if nothing else, I wanted an action shot. Thank you Judith for a lovely, lovely, lovely shawl. I adore it and the only way I can be encouraged to bring it to Liberty tomorrow, would be if I could find a way to chain it onto me!
The rest of the post is for Molly & Fred, on explaining the significance of the number 48. OK, for Tessa too.
In Chinese, the sound of certain words is auspicious. Would you believe that people pay a lot of extra money to to buy a house, vanity plate or telephone number just because it had a bunch of 8's in it?
8 is lucky because it sounds like wealth, so the more 8's the more wealth.
48 is lucky because the 4 sounds like forever and with the 8 , you get a phrase like forever wealthy... something very auspicious for a young couple. Chinese red envelopes are always given in even amounts. (Only in funerals do people give out white envelopes with odd number inside.)
4 on it's own is not lucky because it sounds like death
58 is not lucky either because the 5 sounds not like not. and who wants to be not wealthy?
May you all have a wonderfully happy day tomorrow and a lifetime of happiness together.
Wow! WoW! WOW! That's all I can say. This red lace shawl is so beautiful. Wow! I love the interesting photography, too. It makes me want to knit a shawl, even though I don't wear shawls. Maybe it's time I did. Thanks.

What is happening on your side of the pond regarding the discontinuation of Magpie?
Happy Knitting,

Your shawl is really georgous !
Please could you tell me where you find this pattern ?
Thanks !!!!!
Polly,
The shawl is absolutely beautiful and will look good on you with your lovely colouring. Enjoy you lucky thing! Debbie
Beautifull shawl! And in red, too. I join my voice to all the praises, lucky you! And the picture shots are putting it into its advantage.
And thanks for the info on the favourite chinese numbers, it's really interesting :-). See you soon!
Polly, the shawl is simply gorgeous, just as yummy as the marmelade. I have all the Simply Stunning patterns and have eyed the puzzle shawl with trepidation, Judith's skill is beyond mine. I haven't dared start on any of the yet, the pile of UFO's is too big already.
Beautiful photography Polly, you have managed to capture the essence of the shawl.
Posted by: Louise at July 15, 2004 09:10 AMWOW! Your new shawl is beautiful! I actually bought that Sharon Miller KSH pattern after Birch came out in last summer's Rowan mag but it looks so much better in red!
Posted by: Sarah W. at July 15, 2004 08:57 AMThe shawl is really beautiful!! Now I got to check out Sharon Miller's patterns. Here in Hong Kong, some buildings skipped numbering the floors with the number 4, i.e. no 4th, 14th or 24th floors.
Posted by: Siow Chin at July 15, 2004 08:40 AMI envy you! I've actually mailed out mine already and waiting for my surprise....
Posted by: marjorie at July 15, 2004 08:14 AMLooks phantastic! I can fully understand your shrieling in delight. It is the 'Puzzle Wrap' from Sharon Miller's 'Simply Stunning' pattern collection.
Posted by: Thomas Holm at July 15, 2004 05:22 AMI think that has to be the most gorgeous shawl I've ever seen. I loooove that it's done in a feisty red rather than the usual white or off white... :0)
Posted by: ms. amy at July 15, 2004 04:56 AMpolly that's gorgeous -- is there anyway you can trick her into telling us where to find the pattern? :) p.s. loved the 48 information below! very fun... and i keep eyeing my denim wanting to join you...but i'm so far behind on my life right now, let alone my knitting!
