It's just so typical, a bank holiday weekend in the UK and the weather has been dicey. I've been waiting since 9am to photograph this, and finally the sun's come out.
What do you think? It's Daydream from Rowan Babies.
I bought the gingham ribbon from Liberty yesterday afternoon, while killing some time, waiting for the Starsky and Hutch to start. It was great fun and I might just consider myself a fan of Ben Stiler. Of course, I did grow up watching Starsky and Hutch on TV and I always thought Huggy Bear was just way cool.
I couldn't understand how Rowan could rate this as a 2 star pattern, since it was just very basic stocking stitch with a tiny bit of lace, but once I got onto the front, it was clear that the pattern was not quite as simple as I'd expected. For one thing, the raglan decreases on the front did not give the same number of eyelets as the back. Then, there was the picking up of stitches using 2.75mm to knit the button band. It took me 3 goes before I finally got it to the point that I could live with it. I still think that it could be neater, but I had really had enough of it when I was done. Then I noticed that the buttons that I bought were too big. The ones that I eventually sewed on are still too big, but they did go into the button holes. (Now the parents that have to put a wiggly baby into this are definitely going to curse me when they can't get the buttons in).
So after a lovely 3 day weekend, I really must stop playing around and get to work on the husband's raglan. This daydream was just thing to get the raglan doldrums out of my system.
I am looking for a pattern for the famous Starsky and hutch sweater. Can anyone help me. I would love to surprise my husband with one.

Posted by: Lis at May 7, 2004 09:00 PMexquisitly knit - picture perfect. someone's a lucky friend!
Posted by: janet d at May 6, 2004 10:38 PMhi - i would love to get the pattern for the sweater with the flower on it. it's quite wonderful and i know i have seen it, but i can't rememeber on what site. i tried rowan (i'm a full-fledge rowanette now - but can't seem to get it since it might have been offered before my time.)
i met kay gardiner who told me about your site - we had coffee today - and i am now a regular reader. when you visit france do you visit la drougerie? write when you have a moment. with all the knitting you do, i can't imagine that is often - but i'd love to "meet".
regards, phyllis in new york
Polly! Do you have little elves who knit for you during the night? Or is this sweater two inches wide? How very speedy, and how completely adorable. You knit like a dream!
Posted by: Ann at May 5, 2004 09:05 AMYou are a dynamo, woman!
In the spirit of Lis's stash-knitting resolve, I've got some Paton's Grace in a pale aqua just crying out to be knit up for a lovely present for a baby girl due on Bastille Day (a true enfant de la patrie). This sweater is so sweet. Definitely layette-worthy. And as an extra bonus, if I knit it while you still remember knitting it, I can have a consultant. LOVE to have consultants! Worked very well on the Lacy! I just eliminated all aspects of the pattern that others had difficulty with! Fiddly picked up edging? Don't need that.
Thanks for the inspiration, as always, Kay
Posted by: Kay at May 5, 2004 01:37 AMIts so beautiful! You top yourself with each finished project.
Posted by: froggy at May 5, 2004 01:23 AMAbsolutely beautiful. And the ribbon is just perfect!
Posted by: Kathleen at May 5, 2004 12:13 AMCan't comment on S&H movie but I'm sure Polly was going to see it just to look at the knitted jacket! (does he wear one in the movie or has that been "moderned" out?)
Posted by: Lesley at May 4, 2004 10:50 PMYour baby jacket is just beautiful and the buttons/button facing look lovely. What a beautiful heirloom for the recipients.
Posted by: Allana at May 4, 2004 06:46 PMOh my goodness, it is beautiful. I love the gingham ribbon- so sweet.
It is truly an heirloom. Gorgeous!
When I first looked at the picture of Daydream I thought it was the picture that the pattern showed. I didn't know anyone could knit like that. I've never seen something so professional. Wow, I am bowled over!
P.S. I love huggy bear too.
polly it looks beautiful you did a great job!!! and the ribbon is perfect. altho i can't believe you liked starsky and hutch. i think it's the worst ben stiller movie i've ever seen. :) if you think you're a fan of his now i suggest "flirting with disaster" "keeping the faith" and "royal tennenbaums" which i am having trouble spelling this morning.
Posted by: carolyn at May 4, 2004 02:02 PMOh, oh, oh!!! I want one . . . for me! How sweet is that? Beautiful work. :)
Posted by: Kerstin at May 4, 2004 01:20 PMMe too - I think it is really lovely and I know just the baby girl I could knit one for! Just need to finish what I'm currently doing first.
Posted by: Lesley at May 4, 2004 11:32 AMPolly the baby jacket's lovely.
I wouldn't lose sleep over a blip in the pattern, as long as you made sure that your yarn overs matched in number!
Are you bringing it to Libertys on Thurs??
Dawn :)
Posted by: dawn at May 4, 2004 10:42 AMPolly,
Wow, that is one gorgeous little jacket. Now I have to put this on my list of "must do's that Polly has already done" alongside the cardi...
I wish my friends could stop producing only boys!!

Posted by: Kristine J at May 4, 2004 09:22 AMWhat do I think?!? I think: WOW! It is so ADORABLE! Impeccable finishing. Wonderful details, too. Perfect choice of ribbon and lovely heart-shaped buttons. I really think it's the little details and finishing that make all the difference in a quality garment. Lovely, Polly! I curtsy to you :-)
Posted by: Becky at May 4, 2004 09:03 AMPolly, that is just the sweetest little thing, and the buttons are perfect. I would love to knit this design but my nephew and his partner have just produced another boy.
Posted by: Louise at May 4, 2004 08:56 AMI love it, and you did a beautiful job! Somebody should have a baby so I can make one! Just not one of my daughters, yet!
Posted by: Teresa C at May 4, 2004 04:03 AMHi Polly, The little dress looks lovely. The ribbon match to the yarn perfectly. Who is the lucky baby to receive it ?
Eva
Polly - it is beautiful. The colour is lovely and the buttons look perfect with it. Do you think I could size it up for me?? :-)
Posted by: Amelia at May 4, 2004 12:23 AMOh Polly just gorgeous - baby will look so adorable in this. You are making me quite broody with all these cute baby/small person clothes.
Posted by: Carol at May 4, 2004 12:15 AMPolly, it's adorable!!! Some lucky baby (wiggly or otherwise!) is going to look so cute in it.
Posted by: June at May 3, 2004 11:03 PMPolly the little sweater is divine! My neice is having twin girls in August and I might just have to try and make a pair of these if I get brave enough! Of course I have to find a copy of Rowan Babies first! thank you for sharing the photos!
Posted by: the country girl at May 3, 2004 10:05 PMWhat a gorgeous little jacket. So pretty.
Posted by: Emma at May 3, 2004 08:34 PMThanks Collette... I thought the picture in the Rowan book was just too sweet, so I knew I had to make this sweater. I've been waiting nearly 2 years for someone to have a baby girl!
Hi Thos ... funny you shoud mention the caterpillar.... I'm just editting the pictures now. Somehow, the photos that I took today doesn't do it justice. I'm waiting for a breeze so the fuzzy bits stand out. ;-)
Posted by: Polly at May 3, 2004 05:52 PMWhat? No mention of my caterpillars? Or do they need a rest first after the long flight? ;)
It looks very cute. I especially like the details on it, the bottom edge and the ribbon, they make it look so much more sophisticated.
It is so sweet. (Trite but true.)
