Heart Warming ...

is finally done. Check it out, I even found heart shaped buttons. I decided to forgo the overstitching on the colour blocks with the hearts, since it looked a bit too busy on such a small jumper. What an easy and fun cardigan to make, enough colour work to be interesting, but not enough to be overwhelming. It's not the best picture, here's one from the scanner.

If I were to do it again, I think that I would rework the button band so that I picked up and knitted 5 rows before casting off. I really detest knitting moss stitch on 5 stitches... all that anxiety with stretching and sewing, made it really hard for me to enjoy the pilot episode of Starsky and Hutch. What a great stroll down memory lane and THAT cardigan that Starsky wore ... that's so kitsch that it will never, ever come back in style!
Country Vicar's Daughter
Back in October of 2002, the Times interviewed the director at Liberty on the shop refit, since Liberty had undergone an extensive refit to create a snazzy new wing in the Regents St building to house the cosmetic, lingerie, shoe and men's collections featuring leading edge designers. By leading edge, I mean high fashion clothing, not on the cusp of breaking through to the mass-markets.... so if you are a fashionata, you would know them, but it's not a brand like Ralph Lauren, Donna Karan or Christian Dior. It's all very well made stuff with the price tags to match. As part of this refit, Liberty also scaled back floor space for textiles, dress fabrics, haberdashery and knitting yarns. The director then went on to say how times have moved on and that they are trying to expand their market beyond the 'country vicar daughters'. This was rather infuriating and I would had stomped my way to Marlborough St to lodge my protests, only I was busy noshing a bowl of porridge with coconuts under the Caribbean sun, and there was the story on Edwina Currie's affair with John Majors splashed on the day old paper.
Since then, the Liberty directors have come to their senses and while dress fabrics have been scaled back, the yarn department has grown and we have been welcomed, so all is forgiven. I was thinking at the time though, that country vicars must be very well paid for their daughters to shop at Liberty.
Here is the link to the Independent story. Since there wasn't a photo, and Jacinta, Kristine and Amelia can't readily get their hands on the Independent in the US...

Lovely Heart you have there. Wonderful job on Chamomille too.

Polly, this is just fantastic! What a lucky little girl the recipient will be, it is just perfect.
I'm with you on the button band, I'd rather pick up and knit around any day, I never get them right when I have to knit a few stitches and stretch the thing.
