So, you don't want do do reverse stocking stitch for the Lacy Sweater, but you are concerned about the flower motif melting away in the stocking stitch. How about this as another alternative?
Rowanette Jill has reworked the motif, so that the flower sits in a reverse stocking stitch box. She did mutter that she wished she added about 3 more reverse stocking stitches on each side of the motif, but she's happy with it and is NOT going to reknit this again!
Yes, she's finished it. Feast your eyes on this
Aside from the boxing of the flower, Jill made the following pattern changes.
1. Used a Jane Crowfoot lacy edging, instead of the one on the orginal pattern. She then sewed it on the edge of the sweater, to avoid all the angst with picking up stitches
2. Raised the neckline a bit. The neckline is probably find for a toddler, but Jill made this for her 7 yo grand-daughter and thought the neckline too wide and low.
3. To upsize the patterm, Jill increased the length of the body and the sleeves. The 3-4yo size has a 28 inch chest and since her grand-daughter is very slim, it would fit fine, with a bit more length.
Jill did this in a very bright pink, which photographed as almost a red. It's a lovely sweater and no-doubt her grand-daughter will love it.
Posted by atu at March 7, 2004 06:17 PMWell, as usual I'm bringing up the rear. I've got one sleeve (I love the easy eyelet pattern; it's the perfect level of stimulation for me!) done, and the back up to the armhole shaping start. I'm making it longer for my 7 year old.
I did do the sleeve stitch pattern for the edging, but I started right out with the eyelets. I kind of like the casual effect of that. It doesn't totally curl up, but it definitely has a slight roll to it. I figure if I don't like it on my girl that way, I can always pick up and knit a few rows of garter stitch onto the bottom.
Jill--your edging is wonderful--looks identical to the edging on Mary, Mary from the Tadpoles book. I thought it was great fun to knit and also easy to sew on the bottom of the cardi. Your Lacy looks lovely and I like the solution to the reverse st.st. need. I'm doing the whole thing in rev. st. st. as per the pattern, just because I couldn't decide. Not sure I like it, but it's going to be a nice comfy pullover no matter what. Wonderful to see others finishing it so quickly....xox Kay

Posted by: Emma at March 8, 2004 10:11 PMKudos to Jill and her darling sweater! All this loveliness is making me think I need to do one of these.
Posted by: Chris at March 8, 2004 02:20 PMVery nice! I think I prefer the flower panel the way Jill did it. It helps it stand out even more. The stockinette is also a nice contrast to the texture on the sleeves and at the edging at the bottom. Sweet!
Posted by: Kerstin at March 8, 2004 12:07 PMLooks great Jill. I've still got 1 3/4 sleeves to go and haven't touched it for days. Hope mine will look as good as yours.
Posted by: Lesley at March 8, 2004 01:26 AMThis is fantastic, Jill, now I know what I am aiming for. Thanks Polly for posting the photo, very nicely done indeed.
Posted by: Louise at March 7, 2004 11:18 PMPolly,
Thank you for posting the photos. Jill, clever you! The sweater looks wonderful! I am currently designing a cardigan for my 9 yodd. She wants a column of hearts going up either side of the front pieces. I was going to knit them as lace on a stockinette stitch background, but now that I've seen your sweater I'm thinking of putting them against a reverse st.st. panel.
