Yup, I started and finished another bag this weekend. Actually, I started it on Friday night and I finished it enroute to the Yarn House. I was stringing the beads onto the strap on the train. There was a very tenuous moment, when the beads nearly scattered across the carriage. Please remind me to NOT do this again. With my luck, I would not only have to go on my hands and knees retrieving beads, I would also get fined for littering on the train!
Here's a close-up of the star. Uniquely for me, I knitted this on straights and mattress stitched together. I was in a hurry to do this and just blindly followed the instructions.
Here's a close-up of the edging. Don't you think that it'll look lovely on as an edging for a baby sweater?
Go Polly! Way to knit on public transportation!
It's a beautiful bag and your description of the recipient's severe wool allergy made me count my blessings--I can still knit wool even if I can't wear it. And if I wear it, I just look really, really pink in the face--a sort of W.C. Fields effect of having drunk too much red wine; breathing continues as per normal.
I note though--no lettering on this bag. Still shy from the Callinectes debacle? Get back on the horse, Polly! You're an excellent knitter, you're an excellent speller, and who can blame you if you're still mastering doing the two at once? Have fun this weekend at the coast, love, Kay

Ann, Jo, By the time I was on the train, I was only string the beads into the strap and knotting the ends, it wasn't that bad.
Kathleen, yes, that is a twisted cord, a lovely way to finish a bag and to avoid i-cords. Itook 4 lengths of yarns, knotted one end and twisted it tightly, then folded the length in half and undid the first knot and then reknotted both ends. It wasn't that long a cord, but if you plan on doind a really long one, it's easier if someone helps you, since it's so easy to get it tangled.
Posted by: Polly at September 24, 2003 07:32 AMWow! What a fantastic bag, Polly, such neat stitches and lovely beadwork. And to think you were stringing beads while on the train, I take my hat off to you. I'm sure that your recipient will be thrilled to bits with it.

Posted by: Emma at September 23, 2003 04:16 PMGORGEOUS!! I love the straps! Is that just the knitting yarn wrapped together or what?
That bag is beautiful, Polly, but I have to say that you've got to be slightly crazy to have even considered threading beads whilst on a train!
I think the idea for using the edging for a baby garment is a lovely one - I might have to tackle beading for the "bump-to-be" (not big enough to create a bump yet!) - it'd make a great edge to a simple tunic top.

Polly, you are a phenomenal knitter. So FAST! I love that bag, and the idea of stringing beads while in motion blows my mind.
Right on!
